Session
“A close and personal look at the musicians, their instruments and the passion to be found at sessions in pubs and bars, wherever a few gather for a tune or two.”
I’m JJ (James to my mum), a Manchester based photographer taking a hobby to the next level. Mainly self-taught, with some formal training, I embrace all areas of photography and am a consummate people watcher, capturing them naturally in their environment.
‘Session’ is an on-going project that came out of some casual shoots in early 2010 where my people watching drew me more to individual musicians rather than the collective. I started to hone in on the detail, trying to capture the place they seemed to drift into while playing and the hands at work. As I expanded my shooting throughout Manchester, the UK and Ireland, I started to envisage the project as an exhibition; looking to draw together a collection of images that capture the intimacy of the session. The age range of those playing and the balance of instruments – 11 tin whistles and a fiddle could never create a brilliant session!
Though I am on first name terms with many of the musicians, I decided not to name any of the images, to give the viewer the experience of walking into a session in a pub or bar; as a stranger wherever a few gather for a tune or two.
Today’s image comes as part of News that i have an exhibition opening in London on the 9th May 2013.
It would be great to see you at the opening or visit at a later date. Feel free to give me some feed back on your experience.
